Your arguments simply don??t hold water. You said in an earlier posting ??What's the difference whether it's a recruiting firm, a phone company, a siding or roofing company, an organization like your local police force, fireman's hall, charities seeking donations etc????? Did you not say this?
I??ve never heard of a phone company purchasing business phone list. Since charities don??t solicit individuals while at work they most certainly don??t purchase company lists. Why would police and/or fire department ever want to purchase a business phone directory? Would a roofing company purchase a business phone directory and then call an AP clerk? Only a recruiter would want to purchase a company phone directory and the entire purpose would be to penetrate the company for the purpose of sales. If members of the company wanted to talk to you then wouldn??t they just call you themselves? Or perhaps maybe YOU know what??s good for THEM when even THEY don??t. Is that what you think?
Jeez, you really have an arrogant streak in you pal. Why do you keep grinding over this topic? It??s as if you put yourself out on a limb and are desperately searching for a way to get back in. Just leave it be.

Perhaps the examples I chose to use were not the best...but before moving on, Charities buy lists from other Charities (of people & businesses they have been successful collecting from)...don't think just because they are a Charity, they don't spend $ to raise more $. They DO solicit businesses...God bless & help them all.
Officers & Firemen Halls purchase lists from one another based on previous years fund raising efforts and names, numbers, addresses of those who donated. How do I know? Because I don't think it's coincidence that after donating to my local station, I start getting calls from other stations in other communities... relentlessly I might add.
Siding/Roofing Co. like Sears purchase lists from somewhere (mortgage companies, real estate companies...anyone who has a list of homeowners)...just like companies purchase lists from hospitals of people who have just had babies...to sell them something.
But, the comparison is what is not pertinent...since your point is that we are "taking" something from a company that is not ours to take...is this correct?
Let me first say that if you are going to bash and target anyone in this scenario, it should really be the individuals pirating and selling these lists.
Sometimes it's simply a disgruntled ex-employee who obtains a list and GIVES it to a recruiter who helped them escape a situation they did not want to be in.
I'd like to reiterate that companies who treat their employees well and fair have very little worries over losing their people to recruiters. Fair, good companies cultivate loyal employees.
The fact that you have such issue with this topic is perhaps indicative that YOU are a either a company owner or manager who has lost good people this way. If people are unhappy in their career, they will find a way to leave whether they are recruited or not.
In my recruiting methods and over the years, I can count on one hand how many times I've "rused" a company for a candidate (in one incident the names came from a manager from the 'source' company who joined the new company and passed the names on to me).
Personally, I prefer to source Professional Association Directories and/or obscure boards on the net...But the majority of my recruiting, out of companies comes from referrals.
Referrals which come from happy candidates I have placed, who know of someone they worked with who is unhappy and wanting a change as well.
Over the years, recruiting in a specific industry, agencies & firms become very in tune and familiar with the inside scoop or "word on the street" of which companies are superior in their treatment of their employees and which companies are notorious for treating employees horribley and unfairly.
No surprise the latter has trouble keeping people on board. Where the former has a very low turn-over and once people are IN...they have no desire to get OUT. No amount of recruiting persuasion can get a happy employee to make a move...so why try.
Personally I never push anyone. If they tell me they are happy, my response is "you're one of the lucky ones...best of everything and do keep me in mind if I can help you out in the future".
At some point in a further discussion...no time now...I would like to discuss the pirating which goes on between technical people.
Techies 'stealing' new technologies, methods, systems, ideas from one another or bringing classified information with them to their next gig....or are you just going to say that's "free enterprise"???
