Has anyone paid attention to the 'vault' home page, specifically "Recession Lessons"? Some of us have been predicting a recession for some time. The NASDAQ tanked in 2000, orders for durable goods are down, dot.coms are failing in droves, corporate profits are down and some are experiencing major losses, and some people are being laid off (i.e. Motorola).
Very soon we all (both FTE's & contractors) are going to start feeling that old law of SUPPLY AND DEMAND when a recession hits. Anyone that was around during the prior recessions of the early 1990s and early 1980s knows what I'm talking about. It was hard to get a job because it was a buyer's market. With the law of supply and demand you get less money (more supply/less demand = less money).
Here in 2001 it's no longer in fashion to be ignorant and blind like Mr. Magoo. It's only a matter of time before a stream of layoffs occur (which always follow corporate losses) and FTEs in our industry will start lamenting about the sleazy use of H-1Bs to undercut salaries & American jobs. That is what it's going to take to curb the use of H-1Bs. |

On another thread I have seen the ludicrous claim that if a contractor isn??t working much over the last 2 years (since Congress opened the flood gates to H-1Bs) then one??s rate MUST be too high. The following is a message posted on ??realrates.com?? pertaining to rates, the on-coming recession, and the impact of H-1Bs. The author??s name is ??turbo??. Please pay special attention to the rates quoted and you decide if H-1Bs are used to break American labor rates. Here is a direct quote:

"I think we're seeing the first stage of the recession. I've been hunting for my next gig, and haven't seen much in the way of unix contract work, at least not at the rates I expect. A few DICE resume trolls listing every skill under the sun (no pun intended). I've been contacted about a couple of FTE gigs at traditionally low
salaries. A couple of the leads I was working were put "on hold" meaning the bork
probably didn't really have a solid lead on the gig. The one strong lead I had fell apart when the bork (t*ks*st*ms) tried to lowball me not once, but twice: this was the gig where they offered $77, I asked for $80, they came back with (hold on to your seat!) $55!
At HP (where I am now) all reqs weren't filled have been frozen. Back in November & early December, there was a quick flurry of hiring, which resulted in several new faces from distant lands, from home towns such as Calcutta and New Delhi."
I wonder how many crooters will get laid off when the next recession comes.
