I am writing this editorial in hopes that someone else considering working for a temp. or
employment agency, will be warned. I recently started work at AppleOne.. I am 19, and I live
with my Mother and younger sister. My Mother is currently disabled, suffering form several
broken ribs and torn muscles in her shoulder which prevent her form being able to work outside
of the home. I took this job so that I could help with income in our household, believing, as they
told me, that they find work for me that would suit my schedule and needs. The first job they
placed me in, I was verbally abused by the boss after giving him a phone message he didn?t like. I
complained to my supervisor at AppleOne, because I had been told if I ever felt uncomfortable at
the job, physically or emotionally , I was to call them and report it. I did. They sent me back. This
job was also out of town for me to drive to, which I has specifically asked for jobs in town, as I
had a classic car I never took outside of Escondido. But, this job was only 2 days, so I took it,
and told them that after these two days they?d need to find someone closer, and if they could find
someone else sooner, that would be even better. They did not try and laid a guilt trip on me.
My next assignment was at a mall for Memorial Day Weekend. I was to work an 8 hour shift,
in pumps, folding clothes and taking them out to the shelves. I ended up running clothes out of
the dressing room, and clearing the rooms in the ladies dressing room. After my shift I could
barely make it to the car. I had to crawl the rest of the night because my feet were hurt so badly. I
rubbed them, soaked them, bandaged them, elevated them, everything I could do to make them
better for my next 3 days of work, because I knew canceling would get me into trouble. Well, the
next morning I couldn?t stand on them, and I had to cancel my shift. My supervisor at AppleOne
had gone to the beach and left all of her numbers at the office. She complained to me about how
she now had to come all the way back up to Escondido and try and get a hold of someone.
Another guilt trip. I also missed the other days due to my injury. At this point I asked my mom to
call my supervisor for me, as I couldn?t get to the phone, and cancel the next two days. She did,
received an answering machine, and also asked about workers comp., because I was now out of
work for those 3 days. This was a Sat. night. Monday AppleOne called and said I had to come to
the office to fill out paperwork. So, we accommodated and went down. When we got there they
told us it was workmans comp. Paperwork, and I needed to go in the back to fill it out and speak
with the supervisor. My mom asked to go with us, because she also had a couple of questions,
and I felt better having her there with me in case I needed help answering something. The
supervisor said no. My mom asked why not, and the supervisor would not answer, she just said
she needed to my mom to stay in the lobby, keep quiet and she could ask questions when we were
done with the paperwork. My mom took her aside, and for ten minutes asked what the harm was
in her sitting there while I filled out the paperwork. The supervisor never answered, just protested
her being there. My mom stayed while I filled it out anyway.
After several days they finally sent me to a doctor, who verified I had tendinitis, a sprained
ankle, and stretched tendons in my Achilles. The doctor they sent me to was also out of town,
even after asking for one in Escondido, they sent me to RB. I was lucky enough to have a rental
car for all of this, but being out of work, I was now unable to pay my mom for this rental car.
However, because I now had a ?claim? I qualified for transportation to and from my
appointments. They would have paid my cab fare back and forth, but being that they wanted to
cut corners, they DID NOT tell us this, and my mother had to drive me to each appoin
