I think you make some excellent points tick'n'tie. One of my only caveats would be this: you can not compare big 4 experience vs. 'industry experience' without specifying further. What I mean by that is that there are a wide range of cultures, work styles, and compensation schemes in 'industry' - not all public companies are the same.
You can't for instance compare a corporate finance department for a private company with less than 100M in revenues for instance against GE. Your statements about scope of training and how hard managers work in 'industry' versus big 4 are probably overgeneralizations. |

cbone42,
My industry experience was with a privately owned company involved in financial services, banking, investments etc with around 45,000 clients worldwide and about $30 billion in assets.
I totally agree with you that not all companies are the same. That's exactly why I specified that the experience I spoke about was my own. Perhaps if I had been in a different business unit where I would have been on a fast track of sorts I would still be there.
I also agree that Big 4 does not equal success necessarily. It's just that it seems that a lot of the jobs I might like to have in the future say "CPA required" and "Big 4" required.
Good for you for being at a company and job where you are so happy. I believe that is what we all strive for. Like I said in the post, coming to PwC was in my humble opinion, the decision that made most sense to my wife and I.
I have also spoken to many fellow PwC folks that complain about their jobs. The only response to that is that many of them have never worked outside of Big 4 so they really only know what the have heard just as you go off what you have heard. A perfect comparison would be being a parent. I have many friends who think they know what it is to have children but until they have kids of their own I just don't see how they could ever truly understand what my wife and I go through day to day with our two boys.
