I'm not trying to have a pissing contest; I've spent a good amount of time getting public company exposure with boards, controllers, and i have pretty regular meetings with my current company's cfo.
I respect auditing but just have my own opinion of it. Several of my friends became auditors, and i have made friends with auditors who have worked alongside me auditing the companies i have worked for. I know auditing from stories told over beers after work as well as extensive meetings with auditors from the junior level to partner.
So thats to answer 'how would you know?'

I'm on a friendly basis now with an auditor from a big four currently auditing my company. (I've been doing work on the 10k we're about to release).
For the last week this guy has been bitching to me about how much he hates his job. 'Dude I was here all night last night - I need a new fucking job, i don't get paid enough for this'. He asks me questions to get through the audit with the addendum 'i don't even care about this to be honest'.
I've had numerous such encounters with big four auditors i've gotten familair with. I realize its not necesarily reflective of the entire practice, but just to add some more flavor to answer the question 'how would i know?'
So i'd like to clarify: I'm not hating on auditors or their experience - I think there are plenty of good people in the field and I think you can learn a lot from it. I just get annoyed by the way fresh grads swallow big four kool aid that they are the only option in business.
For what its worth, come september i'm actually going into a top ten law school (which one I'm not sure yet), so this whole industry will be a valuable back pocket skill set at best.
peace.
