Two questions...
First, when does the promotion to senior for a solid performer generally occur? After how many years? And when during the year do promotions occur? How about for manager?
Second, what is the average salary (average office, not NYC or Chicago, but not a small office either) for the first 5 years or so?
Thanks. |

answers depending on group, specialty & office. Here's what I understand from my experience. Note this is a HUGE Firm and experienced hires are often way off the standard curve.
New Hire to Senior: "solid performer" is a tough term; it's relative to everyone you're up against at the same level. Slightly above average to above average - 2 years. Truly, purely, average - 3 years; any longer, you're in the wrong business.
New Hire to Manager: 4-5 years (at the outside, these days, 6 if you're going to make it at all). If you start as a new hire and aren't a manager in 5 years you might want to seek employment elsewhere.
All promotions for all grades are annual and are announced in July-Aug (Partner announcements usually a bit earlier), raises occur in Sept. Note they've been tinkering with the timelines lately but those are only a difference in when the announcements & increases occur, all promotions and raises are annual only.
Salaries only for an average office (signing & other bonuses vary):
New College Hire: $47-52K
Staff (1-3 yrs. exp): $50-60K
Senior (2-5 yrs. exp): $55-70K
Manager (5 yrs. exp): $65-85K
Also, there are "bands" - not published, and not gospel - that exist for these staff levels and from what I understand, the top "band" for a staff is around high $60's, and the top "band" for seniors is roughly high $70s.
