post on this topic I've seen in the last few posts. I always got the job done, done right, and went home when I wanted. The long hours & maturity things I noted were observations, not personal experiences - every senior, manager, and all up the chain I worked with @ the Firm knew well they'd have a big issue on their hands if I had to stay past 7 or had to work a weekend and I did both maybe 20 times in 7 years, that's it. I pulled my weight, every time, all the time. I might have gotten a bit of grief about it every once in a while, but I kicked everyone's a** when it came to doing the job and they learned to respect that. You DO need to stick up for yourself, and your free time, and I did. I never travelled anywhere near 80% of the time; at most I travelled maybe 30% of the time and 4 out of 7 years I never travelled at all except for training. However, I do have to object to the fat & drunk comment. Some people enjoy that. |

I've had 3 jobs in the last 4 years. I'm currently making a little over double what I was making 4 years ago.
Throughout my career strategy I have kept my focus on number one - I did as much work was needed to get to the next level of my career whether it was with the same company or at a different one.
There are always those obnoxious office space people (they seem to be a lot in accounting/finance) who can't differentiate between hours in a chair versus the quality or quantity of actual work done. These people have berated me for working 'flexible hours' when I'd leave at 5-6 to finish a grad degree or what not. They would think to themselves that I was probably going nowhere.
Then I tell them I got a promotion or a giant salary increase at another job and they swallow it. It is a maturity thing and sometimes you have to play the game - but never lose sight of the fact that it is just a game.
