In Reply To: Get the job done, get it done right, and go home. This profession can easily brainwash you into the idea that work = life. You've got to manage yourself like a business, and when the costs (i.e. hours, frustration, travel) start to outweigh the gains (experience, pay, opportunity), then you know its time to close up shop. You REALLY need to stick up for yourself at these big firms and fight for your free time becasue fat, drunk, and talking about GAAP at the office christmas party is no way to go through life!
Message: post on this topic I've seen in the last few posts. I always got the job done, done right, and went home when I wanted. The long hours & maturity things I noted were observations, not personal experiences - every senior, manager, and all up the chain I worked with @ the Firm knew well they'd have a big issue on their hands if I had to stay past 7 or had to work a weekend and I did both maybe 20 times in 7 years, that's it. I pulled my weight, every time, all the time. I might have gotten a bit of grief about it every once in a while, but I kicked everyone's a** when it came to doing the job and they learned to respect that. You DO need to stick up for yourself, and your free time, and I did. I never travelled anywhere near 80% of the time; at most I travelled maybe 30% of the time and 4 out of 7 years I never travelled at all except for training. However, I do have to object to the fat & drunk comment. Some people enjoy that.
