Topic Name: Summer/Fall Start Date for New Hires?
Message Name: Whatever you do....if you can,

In Reply To: I started in late summer/early fall of '05. We were given the choice of three different dates: Aug 8, Aug 22, and Sept 6. I would think it would be similar this year and I'm sure HR would be pretty flexible. I would just let them know that you want to travel and make some plans.
Message: find out what percentage of new folks (especially from your office) are starting on each respective date. Although I was an experienced hire, I saw many new hire "classes" come in and it definitely seemed like starting later was a mistake (unless pretty much the entire "class" did so - I never saw that). Of course, all that will smooth out over time, but I would still recommend you try to start on the earliest possible date. When you're talking about a Firm where so few people last more than 2-3 years, even a few weeks or a month can make a difference - remember, your first few months, first year, etc. is supposed to be the "sponge" period. Don't miss out on that by starting later.
