I am thinking what I should say if I was asked where I see myself in 5 years...some friends of my said it's good to show that you are interested in growing within the same company instead of looking to go outside of the firm...but if that is thought to be a mean to an end...what the interviewers expected to hear when they ask this question..
Isn't it too typical to say i wanna stay in audit and work my way up to manager position?

Don't stress too much about that question, chances are it won't be asked.
I'm gonna go on a limb here and guess that the only reason they ask that particular question is to see if you intend to stay with the company or if they are going to be wasting time and money in training you. If that is true, then you don't want to tell them that you are only using them as a stepping stone.
You could say something along the lines of "in 5 years I will have progressed in my professional career with the firm through hard work, and will be able to apply all that I have learned to the additional responsibilities that I plan on taking on." That's a little corny but you get the idea.
