What NYC had mentioned is pretty consistent with what I experienced. It does vary from office to office depending on the need and the number of candidates being interviewed.
It's true that if it's obvious that you're the perfect fit and all the interviewers like you, you'll get an offer quite soon. Also to mention that if a lot of candidates are equally qualified and liked, then that's when it may take some time for them to decide. I have helped out with recruiting, and from what I seen, those that the interviewers like will get offers right away whereas the remaining spots will be selected from a pool of remaining candidates in which there may be inconsistencies amongst the interviewers.
In terms of rejections, I don't know what the deal with those are. I wish you great luck!

PwC in Cali: Many thanks for your insight. Based on your and NYC's comments, I am most likely relegated to the not-top-choice group (it's been five business days since I interviewed, and no word yet). At least I haven't been completely eliminated yet. Only time will tell.
In the meantime, I did have an additional question for anyone: if you interviewed for Assurance, for example, and don't get an offer, is it unheard of to ask your recruiter whether you could be considered for another area, such as Advisory?
Also: if a candidate is rejected, what's the recommended route for trying again (e.g., through web site)?
