I'm new to the firm and I found out two weeks after I started that my group has to travel for weeks at a time. No one mentioned this in any of my interviews. As a newlywed, I'm not too thrilled at the prospect of 50 to 100 percent travel and neither is my spouse. What should I do? I want to talk to someone, but I don't know where to start. It seems like my colleagues have no qualms about traveling so much, even the ones that are married. All of this has me thinking about going to another company. I didn't have to travel in my old company. Please advise. |

Hi Yowza,
I'm very surprised that this was never mentioned or acknowledged in your interviews. You can pretty much count on being a road warrior if you work for this firm, and probably any of the other Big 4's.
You didn't mention what area you are in. I think your best bet is to talk with your coach about this. Approach it from this angle - don't complain, whine, etc... because then you'll be labeled as a troublemaker. Indicate that you are a newlywed and that when they consider you for assignments, you'd appreciate it if they could keep you close to home base.
Hopefully, your coach will remember what it was like to first be married and the fact that there's a lot of adjustment and logistical issues to deal with.
While nothing can ever be guaranteed, you'll find out soon enough if they consider you valuable enough to honor your wishes. Sometimes, depending on the group you are in, you bounce from assignment to assignment (this would be true of the Advisory group). When Business Development sells the next gig, all they're thinking about is the $$$, not the impact of making people like yourself, travel across the universe.
If you still get assigned to something with extensive travel, you do have the option, after six months, of posting for another position within PWC. Usually when they post positions, they indicate the level of travel.
Hope I've helped...PWC0101
