I have heard that bioinformatics PhDs are in hot demand and can ask for any salary. There is a big demand and not enough of a supply. So, good luck! I heard this recently at a talk at MIT straight from the mouth of one of the heads of research for Milleneum Pharmaceuticals. The salary is probably about 60-70K for a starting PhD with good experience and with post doc experience some are getting near 100K; at least that is the impression I got. |

The funny thing is that to gain entry into Bioinformatics there are two graduate pathways: 1) Spend six years in a Ph.D program, do a PostDoc or two, get two to three years experience, then apply for a hardcore level position. Or 2) Spend two years in a M.S Computer Science program get 1-2 years work experience and then apply for a hardcore level position.
Why waste time getting a Ph.D when all Bioinformatics requires is CS skills at the M.S. level? (at least for the most part)
