Consulting is not a long term solution |

I graduated with a BS in Economics and Finance 7 years ago and decided to go into IT consulting. I work for a mid-sized, public, management/technology consulting firm. I always planned to go back and get my MBA at some point. However, over the course of that time period, I have risen up through the ranks fairly quickly (Analyst -> Consultant -> Sr Consultant -> Manager) and now find myself making over $100k in base salary plus a 10-15% bonus. I will probably come up for promotion to Director in another two years, and total compensation at that level is in the $150-200k range. Therefore, it is nearly impossible for me to justify going to B-School at this point. I don't really need it from a career standpoint, but I would love to do it just for personal growth and development. However, the opportunity cost of not working for two years plus the cost of tuition preclude me from making that leap. |

Dear bad..
My opinion as a consultant and exp. senior vice president of technology for a major nyc marketing company is to tell you this: businesses go through peeks and vallies and the first person out the door during cutbacks is the consultant. although there is little security in 2003 consultants get it a bit worse...its also harder to find opportunities in bad times because everybody and their sister jumps onto the consulting band wagon thinking it is the road to financial freedom...be careful use your experience to build a slightly more secure future.
