In Reply To: An MBA won't hurt but it's no good by itself. YOU have to be good. Like many people who post on this board you should try focusing on the work rather than the short cut. People get promoted because they are good at what they do and show promise to be good in a more senior position. Yes, we all know there are many people who get promoted beyond their capabilities but we can't blame them or hope to become one of them. As an aside, it's not their fault, it's the fault of the person who lacked judgment in making the promotion. That person probably arrived in his or her position by a similar stroke of misjudgment! Circles? Yes, networking helps and there are still "old boy" networks which undoubtedly can aid in promotion or acquisition of better positions but there is no such thing as a "pass." Also, if you're not in a network, it will be tough to find and enter one. You will just have to get out there and meet people at trade shows, golf clubs and the like but why not put that energy into your job? Bottom line, concentrate on what you're doing today and be good at it. Get the MBA too but the MOST IMPORTANT thing is displaying good skills, work ethic, dedication and loyalty. I'll say it again, the old fashioned way, WORK.
Message: Obi-Wan. I shall refocus on my work and continue to listen to sage advice. PS. Do you get paid for your advice in the real world?
