In Reply To: Thanks for the post. I appreciate your perspective. At this point in my career, I know that I've got more technical aptitude than most other BAs. Due to lack of exposure, I can't compete in the programmer arena. I just don't have experience. I was looking at the certificaiton process as a way to gain that experience and would definatley look for a program where the focus is on getting my hands dirty. If the cert won't open the doors for me, what's the best way to get the experience?
Message: In deed, how do you go about getting the position you seek? To state the obvious, it's tough. Certification without experience is going to do very little to help. I would suggest this, and you may already be in the right position to try this angle. Get into a large company, which has the potential to give you the ability to change departments. Get transferred as close as you can to the job you're really after. If you're really good and really lucky you could get straight into your target department. Assuming you??re not lucky, buddy up with the folk in your target department and show real interest in what they??re doing. Don??t be annoying, don??t stop them from working and don??t forget about your own job. This is where being active in a certification course could help. Let your new ??buddies?? know what you??re doing and even ask for assistance if you??ve developed your contacts sufficiently. Again, don??t be annoying and don??t ask dumb questions. Ask the type of question that shows you have a good understanding of the subject matter. Something that perhaps does require clarification as to how it might be deployed or used in a real world scenario, preferably within your own company. If you can do this WITHOUT BEING ANNOYING, guess who might stand a chance to transfer in when an opening comes up? While this is going on, remember to be really good at the job you have because transfers usually only occur if you are good. Your ??current?? boss should be pleased to see you progress. Of course there are situations where really bad people get transferred because it??s the only way to get rid of them. ;-) I wish you the best of luck, it??s not easy out there.
