I've been a consulant and/or manager/director with IT consulting companies for 8 years. Very gratifying! I have travelled at times and at times not and I'm in the NYC metro area. So, consulting companies, as noted by a previous reponse, WILL have you travel if business dictates it(i.e No business in YOUR area, you are available!).
However, there is a rainbow! As also previously explained by another reply, MOST companies, especially within their IT organizations, have taken to building dedicated Project Management practices/divisions for managing IT projects. Look there. Hint: ESPECIALLY FINANCIAL companies!
Also, project management is not just a skill anymore. It is a full fledged career with a world recognized certification you can obtain. You can find out much more at www.pmi.ORG!
