Stay away from Big 5 |

I'm a senior professional with 20 yrs experience in product design, primarily small embedded systems. I have a BSME and MBA (1994) from a good, but not top-tier school. I have strong organizational, technical, and project management skills. I feel I've stalled with my current career and I would like to leverage my skills as a consultant. I have been told I could start as a manager or principal. I don't have any direct IT or coding experience.
Anyone have advice as to whether this change is a good idea at my career stage, what obstacles I face, and good companies/roles to look into? Thanks. |

I basically have the same background as you although I have done alot of Software engineering.
I tried the Big 5 route and was expected to dress in suits, travel 100% of the time, and be promotable to Partner.
All I got was a bunch of B.S. a never-ending 80 hour work week and about 1/3-1/2 the money I am know making as an independant consulting working 40-45 hour weeks.
I hope this helps
