In Reply To: I am interested in switching from my current position as a manufacturing engineer to a position designing computer systems (erp, supply chain etc.) for manufacturing environments. Since I do not know a great deal about the IT industry, I am not sure for what types of companies do this and what the positions are called. I am not interested in programming at all. I understand it but do not want to do it. I want to project manage implmentation and possibly even identify what the client is looking for and ensure that is what is delivered. I will have my MBA in ops in 2003, but need to know for internships and job hunting. Somebody let me know what this is called. Thanks.
Message: Manugistics and i2 are the two premier supply chain optimization software companies. These packages are more like decision support systems, which means they sit on top of an ERP system and use all the transactional data to make better planning, purchasing, inventory, and manufacturing decisions. i2 has laid off quite a few people of late, but Manugistics seems to still be going strong. Oracle, SAP, JDEdwards, etc also have fairly good SCM modules. As for positions, it sounds like you might want to look into consulting, where you would evaluate customer supply chains and help implement the software to fit their needs. Unfortunately, because of all the consulting layoffs it might be more difficult to enter the industry without strong experience.
