I am currently an enrolled undergrad at a top 20 business school and plan on emphasizing in MIS. Ideally I would like to become an IT consultant, however, I am very confused as to what I should be doing right now. I know technical knowledge is important, however, it is difficult to obtain a technical related internship without prior experience. Is this all BS or is it just me? I am currently teaching myself VB, but I'm not sure that will even benefit me in the future. What can I do to improve my situation or to gain more knowledge? Should I change my emphasis all together? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks! |

I suggest that you learn some of the MS .NET stuff (VB, C#) or go into Java and XML. I can recommend the Deitel books fopr both Java and XML. Start with the Deitel XML book, which came out in March, and wait for the 4th-edition of thr Java book, which is due out in September.
For Java you might also look at the O'Reilly "Java Cookbook" book, which came out yesterday. Excellent troubleshooting section.
Good Luck.
