Message Name: I agree, but it depends ...

In Reply To: I've been in both, but took a different direction than most. After 4 years as an employee I went into independent consluting, where I built a skill base. I accepted a permanent offer in 1998 and am now in one of the Big 5 as a software designer/implementor/architect. I really like my role here (I usually get the challenging stuff and don't have time to get bored). But you almost HAVE to keep up outside of work hours to get to and stay at peak value. Doesn't mean you have no time for hobbies. I usually work 45-50 hours a week, plus maybe 2-3 ours outside. The swot time varies greatly however, on up to 20 hours a week, which gives me no time for play.
Message: It depends upon your skillset. I worked as an ERP consultant and was traveling 100% for a year. Then when my contract came up, I asked for more money. However, with my experience level, the consulting firm would not give me the money I wanted. I left and I'm glad I did so, because I later found out that they were laying people off. Now with my corporate job at least I have a life and get paid even more $$$!
