you make the choice...
If you want to indulge into your hobbies, do it.
Just dont work for a large consulting firm. Most consulting firms though do not appreciate this..
I choose to spend more time with my Family. the companies motto was "Family first"
...
6 months Later I was Laid off.
Although I was one of the High Performers.
Problem with these companies is that you can not even appreciate the extra vacation days... (when do you take up these?)
you must take the initiative.
they certainly wont.
now, I work in a stress-free environment, doing not more than 40 hours/week

I've worked for high tech companies and a pure IT consulting shop. Take it from me, stay away from the IT consulting shops. Sure, they paint a rosy picture with all the added perks, but in reality, it sucks! I would rather work as an independent contractor and deal directly with the clients, etc. If you go consulting, you could be either bored to death on the bench (in between gigs), or working your butt off traveling weekly, with no personal life. It's not worth it. Don't believe the hype they give you, i.e., etc. You will earn every penny by working your tail off!
