In Reply To: Where is ERP heading particularly from a consultants point of view. I'm currently in B-school and have 4yrs of implementation experience - trying to decide whether to continue with ERP or move in another direction
Message: I've been contemplating exactly the same thing over the last two years. I was an ERP consultant for about two years and then left for an investment banking job. Now, my investment banking job has gone down the tubes, and I'm thinking about ERP, again. First of all, there was a huge demand for "functional" ERP consultants, while there was still plenty of implementation work (prior to Y2K). If you are SAP R/3 or PeopleSoft, you can still find plenty of functional consulting work. However, if you choose a package like J.D. Edwards OneWorld, you will see the demand is mostly for for OneWorld developers (those that can program also), not functional consultants. I made the mistake of choosing J.D. Edwards over SAP R/3. J.D. Edwards is a second-tier ERP player trying to make it in the big leagues. As a result, functional consultants top out at $65K and developers at $85K, plus you will be traveling 80%+. My advice is to stick with SAP R/3 or PeopleSoft. They have the clients that are willing to pay you the big money. You should at least get that before you give up your personal life with all the travel.
