In Reply To: I was laid off 3 months ago. now i have a good looking job in an industry and geographical area of my choice, limited travel, good pay (+100K) . Still doing consulting. rule of thumb : per 10.000 annual salary, expect up to a month of job-seeking for similar or better positions. My resume on monster.com was consulted 300+ times in 2 mos. mostly bodyshops and opportunity recruiters though had to screen my email and phone messages... I received 1 offer through personal networking. (fortune 100 firm, they were impressed, but wanted to try me out at a lower level first) received 1 offer through monster.com (smaller consulting firm, which I accepted) I received 1 offer through a recruiting agency. Looked promising, but the company had so much red tape and took to long that they lost my interest. I Suggest to use personal networking and / or specialized headhunters or dice.com I just got lucky with my resume on monster.com Do NOT give in in accepting lower positions or pay ! even if you run out of cashflow, Try to hold on! the first month, expect not much responses. Another Tip : negotiate a good severance package (like a 2 months pay +1 month per year employed. At your new employer, specially if you have some doubts about stability. If they agree, you have at least some breathing room. Means they mean business, and you have a jumpstart in case it dont turn out.
Message: one month of looking per 10K of salary? Maybe once upon a time but not anymore, not by a long shot particularly in IT consulting. If you are reasonable I would not expect much more than a month or two to find a six figure job. Your resume was consulted 300 times in two months? Mine was consulted 300 times in two weeks. As a side note a lot of consultants are over valued because of the internet boom. Check out the salary surves here on valult I think they are in line. If you are asking more than you see here, you are probably asking too much.
