What do you consider management consulting? |

Coming out of school I've been working in the IT decision support sphere (completely different that the operational applications work that people usually associate with IT professionals). I took two years off to earn my Masters in Infomation Science (similar to an MBA but with 50% of the course work devoted to IT management and related courses such as data management and global web business). In addition to my core finance and accounting course, I took both of my 2nd year electives in finance, having worked in financial service during my pre-grad school IT career.
My goal is to move into management consulting, specializing in BI and/or CRM (hopefully in financial services, but it doesn't have to be). I want to do real consulting, not the "consulting" that IT factories like EDS or Accenture do.
Any suggestions?

What do you consider management consulting with those particular technologies?
Do you mean you want to do more requirements analysis for BI and/or CRM? Conduct an alternative analysis across different BI/CRM application suite? Develop an enterprise architecture that may incorporate BI & CRM? Combine change management practices (such as business process re-engineering) to a BI &/or CRM solution?
Those are all examples of more the "soft skill" side of consulting that incorporates technology but doesn't require actual application development.
Still, you may see it in consulting firms grouped as part of IT consulting (albeit more strategic than most) rather than management consulting.
Depending on what you're looking for, most consulting firms have that type of cross-functional but still IT-centric management consulting position. You should make it clear in the interviews that while you have a background and degree in IT, you want a cross-functional role.
I would suggest you look at the list of firms listed on vault that are top in both management and IT consulting. It'll give you a idea of those that offer a good blend of both.
