Thanks man, I appreciate the kind words of advise.
It turns out that they had asked me what my bottom line was. I told that if they would match my current base salary with their base + signing bonus, I would consider the offer. The operations manager said she'd call me back the next day. That was 2 months ago.
The problem was that they didn't want me as an SC1 since they claim that I have not used the AIMS method. They agreed that my experience was substantial but they promised a quick promotion.
The whole process was extremely unprofessional! They ended up not calling back at all. I just recently accepted a strategy/management position with Cingular.. The salary is approx. 3x the hitachi offer.
This was possible through excellent job references from my current work. Apparently my co-workers said some amazing things about me, and I got asked for to take this role... Hitachi's loss... If their HR/Hiring processes were more organized and professional, I would be doing great things in their camp.

if you don't mind, could you tell me what hitachi offered you was? im planning on applying there .. also, did you happen to know what the salary bands were for the C1, C2, SC1 positions?
