In Reply To: Hi, In need of professional advice. Here is the situation, I have been working in same I.T consulting(technical) field for 2 and a 1/2 years. My current (big 4) firm would be my 3rd company. 1st company went bust, went from 2nd to 3rd firm because 3rd firm was a much branded one plus they do a broader range of service in comparison. - so I've got my reasons. I'm 80% sure I'll be getting my promotion from an Associate to associate consultant in 6 months, but company culture, its practice and this particular service I'm in does not capture my interest. My Question is: - How important is being consistent with my competencies? I'm below 25, been in the same industry for 2 1/2 years. Will it be absurb for me to leave to venture out other line of service when I'll be promoted in 6 months time? (Considering I'd probably develop more interest and grow faster in another industry) thanks
Message: But I hedge my advice... Retirement has a way of sneaking up on you. Take into account you personal situation (wife kids and a house will often times dictate necessary career moves) But at the end of the day in such uncertain times "dont throw away the dirty until you get clean" If you quit there are no guarantees on any new jobs; keep stability of your resume on your mind; you move towards vesting in any one of a number of financial instruments (be they pension or partially vesting in 401K or profit sharing contributions) And it is possible to retire at 55 if you dont piss away your money on fancy cars or single malt scotch. Theres plenty of time for those things. Make the move only if your financial situation dictates that you should. (Like if you're starving and the landlord is at the door and the new company is going to double your salary.) Otherwise..stay put Just my .02
