youre 25 . too young to lock yourself anywhere. You're ONLY mission in your 20's is to find a career you'll like. B/c after that, you'll be lokced in like a death sentence, whether you like the job or NOT. (kids, wife, house)
Don't be fooled by silly little management mindtricks, like a promotion.
PS: You hardly have competencies after 2.5 years. You barely have worked, son. You will know 10x as much at some point. Do not think you have all this vested knowledge. you dont.
The last poster is CLUELESS. Retirement at 55 is a myth. you will probably have kids at 30-35. at age 55, they will JUST be entering college. you think you'll be able to take a 50% paycut at that time? no, you'll be getting a SECOND JOB at age 55 to suppport your kids.
Also, he advocated staying just for a pension. Big 4'
s dont even have a pension. They have some fake token employee contribution plan.
it is TRIVIAL. |

The only reason retirement at 55 is a myth is because people do exactly what Anteater recommends. When you're starting out you're not thinking about retirement but you should be. Yeh, yeh, I know there's plenty of time to worry about that, NOT. So you don't retire AT 55 but at least you can retire before 65 or before they cart you out on a gurney. I'm approaching 55 and could quite easily live on 50% of my pay and I'm sure many others could. If not, a low stress job to help out (or a job closer to home or in a "nicer" part of the country.) would not be the end of the world as we know it... actually, maybe it would, and that would be a good thing! Realistically, there aren't going to be too many 55 year olds retire let alone on 50%, I was using my friend as an example. What I am saying is start thinking about retirement NOW. I was given this advice years ago and, like most people ignored it, hence the myth of which Anteater speaks.
Remember Andrew, Anteater has been embittered by management, he clearly shows this be stating that promotions are "silly little management mind tricks." Yes, there are still people out there that think "management" is evil yet they're the same people who are striving to become managers. I really hope they don't make it and I hope that you do. I've known and promoted many technicians who, after a couple of years, have shown their capabilities. In fact it's easier (and more appropriate) to promote in the early stages of a technical career as someone progresses from perhaps, Trainee/Junior to Technician, to Senior Technician, to Specialist/Team Leader/Project Manager etc. It's a means to give the employee recognition, grow the employee and keep him/her at a competitive salary. I'm not saying "stay for the retirement plan," I'm saying that by now you should know what you want to do so it's just a matter of where you're going to be doing it and, unless where you are is a Hell Hole, you should give serious consideration to building a career there.
