In Reply To: Hi, In need of professional advice. Here is the situation, I have been working in same I.T consulting(technical) field for 2 and a 1/2 years. My current (big 4) firm would be my 3rd company. 1st company went bust, went from 2nd to 3rd firm because 3rd firm was a much branded one plus they do a broader range of service in comparison. - so I've got my reasons. I'm 80% sure I'll be getting my promotion from an Associate to associate consultant in 6 months, but company culture, its practice and this particular service I'm in does not capture my interest. My Question is: - How important is being consistent with my competencies? I'm below 25, been in the same industry for 2 1/2 years. Will it be absurb for me to leave to venture out other line of service when I'll be promoted in 6 months time? (Considering I'd probably develop more interest and grow faster in another industry) thanks
Message: Andrew, I enjoy my job but you know what, it is a job. If you're doing well where you are, stick it out for a few more years and throw yourself into it. Enjoy it because that green grass you see on the other side of the fence just might be moss. I have a friend who stayed in the same job for thirty years and retired (was retired) at 55 with a pension that was 50% of his last salary. Damn, I could take that. Only, I can't because I made too many moves. Now you're young and just starting out and not giving too much thought to retirement, the same as me just a few years ago. Trouble is, those few years add up quickly and turn into a few decades. If you stay with your current job a few more years you'll soon find out you've been there a few decades. You will be able to look back on some great projects with some great people, and some not so great projects and not so great people. You will also have climbed the ladder, vested and positioned yourself for a life after work., Remember, it is just a job.
