In Reply To: Good answers my friend. I would recommend this. Start in a programming position with a large organization so that you will have opportunities to move up or sideways without having to change companies. Nothing worse than a job hopper! Remember the interview process is a two way street so you should be interviewing them as they interview you. I'm about to say "Assuming you get a good manager." before I do that, bear in mind that if you don't have a good manager, you shouldn't blame the poor schlub. You picked him/her every bit as much as he/she picked you. So, assuming you get a good manager, your skills will be recognized and a basic coding position will turn into a lead programmer, systems design position very quickly. It is true, good people are hard to find and if you are good, you will be noticed. In the early stages you may not get the title but you will certainly get the work. Attitude will have as much to do with this as will skill. One is no good without the other. Be proactive, THINK, don't be a 9 to 5'er but at the same time, don't hang around just for the sake of it. And THINK. Look for issues, (It should become a natural part of your daily work.) if something doesn't sound right if probably isn't, use your common sense. THINK. Do as you're told but not just as you're told, THINK. In gaining this experience you will be able to see how others work (or don't) and what the various roles exist within the organization. Spend a couple of years learning and then make a move (If by then you still want to.) based on "knowing" what you want from experience. Good luck.
Message: Very helpful, legalgman, I appreciate your advice!
