I was hired to run 3 small libraries in a rural area. The hiring was very quick, like "here's your duties/locations.. you're on your own from here."
I walked into a very bad situation.
I am 27. The average age of my employees is 40. There are 4 woman who have worked at these places for years, most were hired because they knew someone or were related to someone.. you know how these small towns are. Well every day is a constant battle. I am a trained librarian trying to manage 3 libraries staffed by people with no skills, save for filling out requisitions and shelving books.. but they remind me daily that they should have my job. Why? because of their age. I have brought this to the attention of the board that hired me. They informed me that none of these people ever qualified for my job and I had no worries.
Well I am worried. One of these people has launched such a hate campaign against me that my safety is questioned and my emotional health is suffering.
I have been physically threatened!
I am quitting the job, but it will cost ME in compensation because I am voiding a contract. I believe I am very VERY due for compensation especially because of the abuse I have suffered.
Do I sue, or do I leave with my life intact and try to get past the damage?
I am Very angry about this whole thing.. I have never met a more evil pile of bitter old women.
I get sick to death when I hear talk about how young people have no respect for their elders.. Bah! It's the other way around I'm afraid folks.
If I had one ounce of support I'd take the board and every individual on it to court.
But I'm afraid if I stay here much longer I'll find a bomb in my car.

Read of your situation working with 40-plus somethings. Unfortunately, this is the real world, and you have to tough it out. You'll be working with all types of personalities and office politics and you have to deal with it no matter what the age (that's all a part of being a manager!). Recently, a 40+ friend got a job she really liked, but her older coworker didn't like her and found a way to trash her.
It can happen at all ages. I've had to work with several young slackers that gabbed the day away while I had to do the work of 2 people while being paid for 1 job! And so it goes...Whatever your decision, I wish you luck and hope you find a better situation.
