This is in response to another post on this message board, but I couldn't see what it was about so I started a new thread.
Contractor said the following:
Politics exists not only in the work place but everywhere because it's all about relationships with people and the pecking order within an
organization. I've seen it in school, on ball teams I've played on, in family, in the work place, in neighborhood organizations, and in an
endless stream of business & social settings. It's a sad fact of life. Some claim they ignore politics but still work the system anyway. Some
just say they just try to rise above it. Everyone complains about it except those at the top of the food chain, every notice that? Look's like
the biggest recipients of it aren't bothered by politics.
The sad fact is that politics, like the weather, is something to complain about but you can't change it. As for me, I'm a product of the late
60's who tried the corporate world and quickly became disillusioned by politics, greed, lack of social conscience, "IN YOUR FACE" style
managers, and the pecking order with it's associated maniacal battle to the top. Having dropped out in the 60's I dropped out in the 90's
and became a contractor. It has its difficult moments and is NOT glamorous but I have more control over my destiny. I don't have to live
my life feeling like a pimp or a pawn. But guess what? I still have to put up with a certain degree of politics.

I agree - you really can't escape politics as they result from interacting with people. I couldn't deal with my boss, so I started my own business. The fact is, I still have to deal with client politics. But, at least any damage that results from working with people I can't stand only affects my business and no one will get on my case about it.

Paul, you gave me the perfect entry to politics and weather. I have been in the weather business all my life. Rose from forecaster to Director/Manager, etc.
I was at a large corporation once (Express Deliveries, large, many airplanes), where they preached leadership and risk taking.
They had a People Philosophy, a Service Philosophy, and the easiest way to get fired was Gross Leadership Failure.
I thought I had found the Holy Grail of corporations. Real Leaders. Baloney! If one so much as exercised the assumed empowerment or tried to discuss "real" problems, the politicos got into action right away.
Much worse at my last job at a private weather service which provides TV Weather.
So many teams and bureaucracy that no one could move, or act. Teams decided, then bosses ignored the teams and decisions taken three months after they could have been. Too late by them. Useless bureaucrats. Hypocrites and ignorers of Policies by the corporation. Would try to intimidate employees from going to HR with complaints. Turnover of almost 100% in three years.
Unbelievable politicking in the worst sense:
lying and undermining everybody. Bad bosses.
Maffia style pragmatics and money makers with easy bucks in their heads. Miami style management....check that out some time.
