Message: A co-worker of mine has been having inappropriate relations (according to her) with our superior two steps above us. She has openly admitted to going on out-of-town meetings (on her days off) at a hotel to meet with him. She has openly discussed many situations, such as him expressing his displeasure with his current marriage in private conversations with her. She has also been receiving gifts (flowers, etc) and gets frequent phone calls from him whenever she is on duty. Our direct supervisors know of this situation, and think its entirely inappropriate but we don't know what to do. First, many of the things that she has said have occurred seem somewhat 'beyond reason,' or as if she may be embellishing the facts. Second, since he is above her by two positions, reporting it to anyone above him would involve a huge number of people. This is because of her discussing the matter so openly with so many of her associates both beneath her and on the same level. She has gone so far as to say that she has been promised a promotion by him, and that she is 'using' the situation intentionally to move up in the company. This situation is so morally skewed that we almost are in a whirl of confusion, since we don't know whether to trust what she's saying, and certainly whether we would not look ridiculous if we were to report it anyway, only to have both of them possibly vehemently deny it. If I can offer any additional information regarding this complicated situation, it may help explain our hesitancy, so please - ask away.
