I have worked in both advertising and pr agencies for the past 6 years. Now, I want to work on the client side in the entertainment industry. But, I am not having any luck getting my foot in the door. Any suggestions? Submitting resumes to HR seems to be a waste. |

Submitting your resume to HR in entertainment IS a waste of time. Use your advertising and pr experience & connections to shove your way in. HR is only there to keep track of benefits and temps. If they say they're really there to hire permanent employees they are not being honest with you.
In the entertainment industry, its' who you know, who you schmooze with COMBINED with what you know. If you don't know anyone, if you cannot net work and if you you don't have skills then get out there and figure out HOW to become a master at getting to know people with pull in the entertainment biz as well as updating your skills. Trade shows are a very good place to VOLUNTEER to get to know who's who and who's approachable. Find out if you can do informational interviews with companies / talent management, armed with a WELL laid out resume of course (just in case someone asks). Last but not least, if you don't already, spend the money and read the trades.
