Hi seihin,
Find your posts very helpful. :) Maybe you can help with this question...
Background: I'm currently completing my PhD in Information Systems, specialising in collaborative supply chain systems. I have no industry experience, but have some internship experience and lot of tutoring experience. Have gone straight from Bachelors to a PhD via an extra year in an Honours program (australian system). So, i've been in the uni system for a long time... will be 30 end of this year.
Does age matter in applying as an associate (or junior associate), especially wrt to level of industry/academic experience (or lack thereof)?
Thanks.

ex-EM has answered your question much better than I possibly can.
One thing I like about McKinsey is their culture of blending academia and business together. While PhDs are only taken into R&D for many major companies, Mck actually uses PhDs as front-line staff -- and they don't really care what field you are in.
Many of us in the PhD program find the lack of industry support for doctorate researchers going into private sector. Not a lot of top firms around treat PhDs in the way PhDs would like to be treated (esp. in top schools where people usually have giant egos), and McK is certainly a rare exception.
2 of the 3 partners/directors I was interviewed hold PhDs themselves, hence understanding I need a flexible start date -- to complete my thesis. I was told by an ibank I must start training with the undergrads, in July; while McK has given me 8 differnt training slots, from Mar to Nov.
I strongly suggest you to apply, good luck!
