In Reply To: Resources. When I was applying around, I hated the 'people' answer, because every single firm gave it and none could explain how their people differed from everyone else's. Now, I can tell you that the people are exceptional, but they're only part of the equation. My $.02 (and I'll add that I have no personal experience with any other firm, so please take this with the necessary grains of salt) is the resources that McKinsey can bring to bear on problems when it focuses on a problem are incredible. Part of that is the human capital (odds are that there's someone in the firm, somewhere, with some expertise to help you with your problem and you're encouraged to call them up and ask for their $.02), but also the sheer amount of knowledge that McKinsey has. Who else has practice olympics (where consultants from around the world compete on the quality of their knowledge designed exclusively for the competition?) or an internal think tank (MGI)? These guys take knowledge seriously, even if there isn't an immediate payoff. Add to that the financial resources to get you whatever you need if you can convince someone that it's needed for a study, and you get a firm that's willing to bend over backwards to do what it has to in order to serve its clients. I don't post much, and I'm a bit of a coolaid drinker (just a bit), but I wanted to jump in before everyone else answered "it's the people, stupid" and provided you with an answer that, while true, may not help a whole lot.
Message: Verbosity.
