Bain (west coast offices) DOES hire APDs at the MBA level and has for several years now. From what I have gathered, the East Coast APD hiring is on a case by case basis. ~30% of the last two years open list hires were APDs on the west coast.
Bain west coast consultants are staffed on single projects, not two. This varies by region (I believe on the east coast it is two cases).
As for hours, on the west coast the average is ~55 hrs/week, but obviously varies dramatically.
I won't get into the 2/3 words that best describe the firms but you should be able to figure that out by talking to consultants who work there.
