In Reply To: With all due respect HBS, this time you're wrong. You just cannot really compare the two firms in terms of "out" opportunities. A very very very tiny fraction of GE folks achieves what an average consultant of the Firm achieves. This is not fair at all to argue that GE "beta" is higher, because no matter how high/low the beta is you always earn the same in the expectations. On the contrary, when you compare GE vs. McK the expected payoff is not equal at all.... I agree that 0,1% of GE managers are in better positions than their counterparts at the Firm. However, all others make me conclude that you're a bit biased.
Message: We are all biased. Human nature. I wasn't trying to say one organization is better than the other. Like I said, "apples and oranges." I was specifically trying to compare the "out" opportunites for those interested in general management. The point I didn't mention, was that I fell McKinsey also provides much greater option value. Form McK one can go "out" into many directions. From GE, the options are much more limited. This is fundamentally why I chose to join McK, rather than return to GE after getting my MBA. The other thing I was trying to do was a bit of a compare and contrast on culture, just because I think it is interesting how many similarities there are between McK and GE.
