I had briefly considered going into MC after undergrad but am happy I didn't if "analyst-wannabe" is at all indicative of the level of maturity and intelligence at the major firms. And to think that CEOs pay for such people's advice! What does your deck have: a 2x2 matrix with "least retarded to most retarded" on one of the axes?
I understand the pay may be better in MC compared to academia, but don't even try to compare it to that of top law firms (which just increased base salaries to $135k (plus $15-$25 bonus depending on billables) vs., what, $115-$120 in MC?). And even in academia, don't forget you're only working like 10 hrs/week and get time off, etc compared to 80+ hours and travel in MC. Yes - I'm including office hours.
I realize that many execs of tech companies are PhDs. Thanks for the info. What does that have to do w/ the conversation? I hope you're not comparing working in MC and cranking our ppt decks and excel models with working at Cisco as an engineer or at Microsoft as a developer or as anything at a startup.
Finally, I won't/can't respond to "bonus1's" comment. I have no idea what he's trying to imply. That Stanford is better than Yale Law? OK - you win.
Sorry to disappoint, but I won't be visiting this board anymore. I only hoped to give my perspective on the whole non-MBA in MC issue, but it's apparenty not welcome. So much for open minds and stimulating debate. I guess that's a lawyer thing. |

Academia vs. consulting is a false choice. If you're truly one of of the 'best and brightest', why not take the advantages of academia (short hours, decent pay, research opps, etc) and supplement them w/ the advantages of free-lance consulting. All of my bschool profs consult part-time and make 100%+ of their prof pay doing it. Best of both worlds! That is, assuming you're *truly* one of the best and brightest.
So I too question the quality of PhDs who go into consulting. Don't know much about law, but I also definitely question the quality of JDs who go into MC.
