Trying to get McK to look at you after a few years consulting elsewhere, when they're not interested in you now, is going to be really tough. If you end up at Bain or BCG and are a superstar there, maybe. The specialist track is a possiblity, but probably not something you can break into from another consulting role; I think most of the experienced hires who end up as specialists have actual line experience, rather than just consulting experience, in their specialty area. I would say, rather than trying to make your decision based on which is most likely to get you into McK (a longshot at best), you should go with whichever option in itself looks the most rewarding. Sorry I couldn't be more optimistic about your chances.
Message: for the advice. As much as I see the logic of hiring top school MBAs because of the pre-screen and taugh programs, I still believe there are professionals out there who - like me - have Harvard potential but took other great opportunities for MBAs based on more than just "I want to apply to McKinsey so I have to be in an top 5 school!" At the end of the day I still think McK is a great company that does hire talent so I'll go on with my life and make the most of whichever offer I accept. As far as I'm concerned, it will be McK's loss if I decide not to reapply. (Probably healthy attitude too :))
