I will have a PhD in pharmacology in six months from now. After spending 5 years at bench I have realized that I am not very interested in pursuing scientific career path. After researching career options (reading posts on Vault from people with my background) and what I would enjoy I have decided to work for Biotech or pharma in their business development department. Specifically, raising venture capital money, positioning technology for licensing, and developing corporate partners. But I have no real business training .. I have thought of getting an MBA but would like to work before.. I realize that consulting firms like Mck/BCG/Booz and boutique consulting firms hire PhD with business bent. But if ones long term goal is to do BD (as mentioned above) then is consulting better option or working where you could get direct experience in spinning off starup biotech from University. Finally, how crucial is to get formal business training (MBA) Vs mini ??MBA at Mckinsey (If one gets into Mckinsey!!!) for such a career option.
I would appreciate any comments on the same.
Thanks a lot
