I find it funny that you criticize others for using anecdotal data, while your whole argument is based on the hearsay opinion of your ONE undergrad buddy.
Here is one very compelling reason for PhDs going into consulting:
My starting base salary is higher than my professor's. To get to where my professor is now, I have to put in at least 8-9 more years in academia. Faced with that economic decision, which choice do you think the "Best and Brightest" will pick?
