Jon is the only person who has applied any analytical rigor to the whole "best and brightest" concept - you deserve a job at McK, bro.
At a recent McK APD dinner in NorCal, we had several EE PhD's from Stanford, Stanford law students, chemists and physicists from Berkeley, etc.
Ummm, I think these individuals qualify as the "best and brightest" in their respective fields. In my humble opinion, getting into and through HBS is a joke compared to getting through these programs. That's why McK is moving to APD candidates - in an increasingly tech-oriented economy, engineeers, scientists and IP lawyers have way more to contribute than another Harvard MBA. |

A buddy of mine from undergrad who's in consulting told me about this Vault debate regarding "adp's" at mck, and I just had to respond. Let me tell ya -- any lawyer who graduated from a decent law school (eg, Stanford, HLS, Yale) who decides to do consulting is a joke! He either figured out too late that he didn't like law, got shitty grades in law school and couldn't get a decent job, and/or couldn't hack it at a law firm.
I'm not saying that consulting is bad or that such people are necessarily "dumb" (though getting through law school, especially Yale w/ no grade disclosure, is hardly as difficult as some people like to believe). I just don't know why a firm like mck would settle for a bunch of wash-ups. They should stick to MBAs -- people who are passionate about business; not people who couldn't find anything better to do. Why in the hell would a company hire mck for IP advice???? Too cheap to hire a law firm?
As for EEs, scientists, etc -- same deal. Any scientist worth his salt wouldn't be caught dead in a consulting firm! Only those who couldn't get tenure, etc. Again, not stupid people, as far as that goes, but definitely NOT the cream of their crop! Does mck really believe they're getting the best people in their fields?
Again, advice from a lawyer: mck should stick to MBAs, who have demonstrated passion about business, strategy, operations, etc.
