Yes, there is a strict up or out policy. 2-3 years is about the longest you can linger at any stage before election (i.e., associate, EM, associate principal), and even the 3 year number is high - it's highly unlikely you could still be around after 9 years without having been elected to partnership. And up-or-out isn't just at these breakpoints - you can be counseled to leave as an associate or EM well before you're in the "window" for advancing to the next level.
Don't know the numbers specifically for MBA hires, but if I recall correctly, only about 1 in 6 associates make it to principal.

Could you please elaborate a bit on why people are asked to leave before they're "in the "window" for advancing to the next level".
Are people usually asked to leave before the oficial evaluation if/when they are really screwed up? Otherwise, it just doesn't make any sense to specify the length of the programs (BA, Ass, etc). What is the purpose of specifying duration if they could ask you to leave any time (and this is a norm rather than exception)?
Specifically, I'm very intrested in BAs competition. Are BAs often asked to leave after being 6 (9, 12) months with the Firm or it happens rarely (in case of obvious fuck up).
THanx in advance.
