why would you want to do consulting over PE? would you rather be a cheerleader or get out on the field? beg and whine for work or be actually the one holding the purse strings? be with just very smart people who you can potentially outclass, or even smarter guys from whom you can learn more? work 9-9 or 9-11?
obviously above points are generalizations and don't always hold, but still directionally correct.
Your fascination with consulting worries me. It's a great gig, particularly for young guys, but don't fixate on it too much or risk being badly disappointed.
