In Reply To: I am a project manager at one of the big IT outsourcing firms...considering applying to BTO in Toronto. Can anyone comment on the nature of work in BTO vs McK consulting, the TO office in particular, and also, is the burnout rate (2yr mark) also apply to BTO?
Message: BTO can be thought of as McK plus - they are McK consultants in that they focus on providing objective business advice from a top management perspective. However, they do so on issues requiring technical expertise for which the rest of us, as generalists, are not qualified to offer advice. This is very helpful to the client, as it is not fair to a client for him to pay me for 2 weeks while I get up to speed on a complex industry. The distinction between the two is not great. I am sitting across from a BTO guy right now who came onto my project because it is a high tech client, but he and I are doing the same work. It is a great route to go if you have some technical background and would like to leverage that background to work in business. It must be stressed, though, that you are really working in business.
