Topic Name: can't accept the offer, can i?
Message Name: Talk to your mentor
Date Posted: 02/14/2006
In Reply To: wouldn't burning bridges and ruining one's professional reputation be a horrible thing to do? especially when i owe my mentor so much already and can't possibly repay his kindness (for many things unrelated to the job itself)?
Message: If I was you, I would talk to your mentor aout your situation. You say he/she is your mentor then he/she would understand your situation and be open to discussion. I mean, at the end of the day, he/she would want a fully committed employee rather than one who thinks they 'missed the boat' or whatever... Furthermore, if I was your mentor, I would think that McKinsey would be a great starting point and therefore suggest you take it. Who knows, after you develop your foundation, you're probably more valuable to him in the future. On the other hand, with his/her experience, he/she might also be able to tell you why you should not take the McKinsey job and work for him/her instead. Maybe there are huge benefits...who knows? Honesty is the Best Policy. If he/she was a true mentor, he/she would support you in whichever option you take!
