People lie to get interviews. People also lie to get into top schools.

people do lie on their resumes.
people shouldn't because it's morally wrong.
the small stuff, "embellishments", implied statements that are incorrect, omissions etc. is unlikely to be caught, but then again also unlikely to make a difference getting you a job. Still most everyone indulges at least a little in these.
The big, flat out lies are career killers. They can help you get a job in the short-term, the prob is once that stuff gets out it seems impossible to kill (you'll have to continue lying to sustain the existing lies...), and will likely come back to bite you way down the road (cf. O'Leary losing the ND coaching job over a resume lie made 30 years ago...)
consulting firms should do more background checks though. I'm pretty sure when they hired me they didn't run any...
