(Hope you don't mind me jumping in...)
From experience on my own teams as an associate and EM, and from seeing or hearing about how other teams worked, I have to give my usual non-committal answer to a question like this, namely: it depends. A confident, well-organized EM on a well-scoped study, who has a good relationship with the ED (the partner on the study), is more likely to be accommodating of lifestyle requests than an insecure EM with an understaffed team on a fire drill study with a demanding ED.
As for communicating your needs, the best bet (I think) is to get them out on the table as early as possible in the study, with an attitude of "Here is something that's important to me, and I would like to make it work, while of course not compromising my productivity or the quality of my work on this team." Best practice is for the EM to hold a team meeting very early in the study (ideally with the ED present) to get everyone's personal (lifestyle) and professional (development) needs out on the table to see how they can best be accommodated. If the EM does not initiate such a meeting, you as a BA or associate can certainly suggest one.
Hope that helps!

Wow, I wasn't expecting a guide about physical fitness, but I am sure it makes much more sense than learning SAP or getting better at Excel.
I am now calmly finishing my undergrad studies, and have many plans for my 5 months summer, including a lot of travel!
Thanks a lot!
