In Reply To: I've raised two contentions during our discussion and they still are valid: A: Recent so-called ??brain drain?? due to b&b migrating to 1) Tech companies 2) Financial-Banking 3) Entrepreneurship is moot as illustrated by Stanford data showing the industry placement trends have been essentially been the same for the past 8 years. B: The spikes needed to be successful in PE/HF are different from the ones in management consulting. My comments on the points you raised: WRT, "...'selection percentage' remains constant, it is in fact applied to a pool of decreasing quality." 1) 'Selection percentage' does not remain constant. You even said yourself that, "Some offices cannot make their recruiting targets, and it is not for lack of applicants. It is for lack of "quality of applicants"". Remember, McK has 2 or 3 rounds of grueling interview process that sends home over half of screened applicants per round--pretty tough process. 2) I've been told that majority of MBA applicants at the top schools drop their resumes to M/B/B. Out of this, 1/5 - 1/6 applicants are invited for interview at top schools like Stanford (jon0377, a Bainee verified this earlier on this post). The best and the brightest from this original pool get multiple employment offers including from M/B/B. These selected b&b have consistently chosen to put their careers and futures in the hand of M/B/B. So, the current MBA pool is not a 'pool' of decreasing quality, but a consistent pool comprising of majority of MBAs in a class. WRT, "...it is an observation [that pool of decreasing quality is noticed by those] who applies to MC and McK in particular, in those schools..." 1) I find this observation highly unreliable. MBAs who are applying to McK this year were most likely young college kids 8 years ago. On what bases do have in determining the quality of MBA student 8 years compared to now. As for your feline example, remember that there are Lions, Cheetahs and host of other qualified cats (APDs) in the feline family. It is of my personal opinion that having this diverse recruiting base helps to strengthen and increase flexibility, sparkle of the incoming McK associate class.
Message: At one top school, one of M/B/B invited 200 people to interview for summer positions; you can infer the range of selectivities implied. No axe to grind here, just providing some data.
